The Mega Millions jackpot was won by a ticket from New York.
The Mega Millions jackpot has been hit! A single ticket purchased in New York matched all six numbers drawn on Friday night, including the white balls 23, 27, 41, 48, and 51, as well as the gold Mega Ball 22, to win the $483 million grand prize ($256.9 million in cash). It is the thirteenth largest jackpot in Mega Millions history, and it is by far the largest jackpot ever won in April since the game began in 2002. The actual number of tickets sold resulted in a jackpot amount that was far more than the first forecast.
The jackpot had been rolling ever since it was last won in Massachusetts on January 31. The jackpot was won four times in a row, including once in New York ($20 won on January 17), and that win closed off an unbelievable January. See the complete list of Mega Millions jackpot winners.
There were a number of additional large win winners at the drawing on April 14. Two tickets purchased in Illinois and Massachusetts matched all five white balls to win the game’s $1 million second-tier prize. And 21 tickets across the country offer a third-tier win for matching four white balls in addition to the Mega Ball. Four of them are worth $20,000 because they included the optional Megaplier (available in most states for an additional $1 purchase), which was 2X on Friday night; the other 17 win the regular $10,000 prize.
During this jackpot run, which lasted more than 10 weeks, there were about 14.2 million win tickets across all prize levels. These comprised 22 second-tier prizes totaling at least $1 million, each of which was won in one of 15 separate jurisdictions across the United States from coast to coast. These jurisdictions included Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
The jackpot will revert to its original starting value of $20 million ($10.6 million in cash) for the next drawing, which will take place on Tuesday, April 18.
